The Iconic Game Turns 20 – How a Plastic Axe Bridged Generations Between Rock Generations

Marking 20 years since the legendary game debuted across the Atlantic, giving players everywhere the opportunity to become rock legends. Figuratively speaking, but try convincing anyone who has mastered Free Bird’s lengthy guitar solo in front of an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Created by the developers, the game gave players a guitar-shaped controller to match coloured notes moving along the display in time with the music. Every sequence corresponded to specific notes, creating the sensation of an authentic live show.

The studio had already experimented in the music genre prior to teaming up with RedOctane, later purchased by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Together, they established the groundwork for an unlikely massively profitable series that had a significant influence for many musicians featured, introducing decades-old groups to millions of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, remembers the early budgetary hurdles of licensing the songs – despite the fact initial releases primarily featured cover versions.

“We rerecorded all the music since the cost was so high,” he explains. “Even with the publishing rights by themselves, it proved extremely difficult. We couldn’t get acts such as legendary groups – RedOctane had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain it would fail. But once the game took off, album purchases airtime were going up, all artists desired to participate.”

He adds: “One of the amazing things was how many parents reached out and thanked us for introducing their children to the music they loved. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Gains Younger Fans

Irish blues-rock band one featured act had their track on the 2008 game Guitar Hero World Tour. Guitarist the artist recalls how the series brought classic rock to the forefront: “Guitar Hero provided a bigger, new demographic. Typically this had been seen as outdated material, but then once it got featured on the game and teenagers were finding it, suddenly it became trendy. That legitimised it, eliminating the ‘dad rock’ label. It gave our catalog renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the band's first record remained not available stateside, meaning Guitar Hero was a key medium for exposure for the group as they went on a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies had on the song on the tour bus, and several recognized us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs Enduring Influence

Music's heavyweight names quickly capitalised on the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in specialized spin-off titles centered around their music collections and related lore, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly earned the group greater revenue than any of their records. It moved more than 500,000 units upon release, while sales of their songs saw an increase of up to 40% at a time when the music business faced decline.

The series continues to inspire quick-handed dedication within the community. Recently, a streamer achieved a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough power-metal song made popular by the game – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with almost identical gameplay but an array of personalization features. The song is difficult even in the hardest setting, not to mention performed at double speed while hitting every one of the thousands of cues. They claimed requiring months of practice of practice.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. If you play other games, that doesn’t mean you should pick up actual weapons and go to war,” says DragonForce guitarist the artist.

DragonForce previously completed a profitable run when their hit appeared on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it turned them into a household name. “I remember our distributors informing us that our records were moving like crazy,” he says. “It exploded when we next toured, and we performed right ahead of the headliners at the event.”

In fact, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero was so immense that it threatened to overshadow everything else accomplishments. Recently, the track was used in a trailer for a major film. “In the past I thought otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “If you only hear a single track, that's fine – each person has their own path in music and I’m glad we played a role in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Impact from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for cars, apparel or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it evokes a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “That’s exactly what we were trying to create,” he confirms. “The excitement of performing as a music icon on the stage. Since the beginning, the co-founders felt that humans have a natural urge to make music, and their goal was to use technology to enable everyone to participate”.

Most of Guitar Hero games came out in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, including derivative titles such as the DJ version, including a turntable controller, and Band Hero. After that, the publisher’s interest on peripherals died down, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Games like Clone Hero and newer releases have kept the community active, with expectations of something from the original publisher in development. Recently formed developers has entered production on its debut rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game following the classic?

“Our team believed such titles might become like Madden where you can update every year,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music it could remain evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason for it to persist with new generations.”
