TikTok is introducing a fresh option that allows them to reduce the amount of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their streams. This move comes as the platform revealed that it presently contains over 1 billion AI-generated clips.
Pilot Phase and Launch
The update is being tested over the next few weeks before a widespread release. This advancement comes amid a rise in AI content, driven by emerging AI video creators.
AI Content on Other Platforms
It has been noted that almost 10% of the fastest-growing channels on a competing service only show clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this content is classified as “AI slop”, a phrase for substandard, bulk-generated content that is often nonsensical or surreal.
Our research shows that many people like content created using AI tools, from digital art to informative clips, and we want to provide users the option to increase or decrease of that, based on their own choices,” stated a spokesperson.
Volume and Proportions
The platform disclosed that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its service tagged as made with AI. Overall, over 100 million pieces of content are added to the service each day, making AI content a relatively small part of its total content library.
User Control Features
Users will be able to decrease or raise the volume of AI-generated videos they view by opening the topic control setting in the platform and choosing AI-made media. Further subjects that currently be modified under the filter include politics, clothing, beauty, and choreography.
Content Labeling and Policies
TikTok’s policies mandate content makers to tag “realistic” artificially created content, and it prohibits dangerous deepfakes of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be removed under its terms of service.
In addition, the service will henceforth add an “AI-made” tag to content made using its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an cross-platform project for spotting artificial media. This measure is aimed to help prevent users from trying to bypass the tagging system.
Educational Initiatives
The platform is also establishing a $2 million educational fund for experts and groups to produce learning resources about using AI responsibly. This project will benefit charitable organizations specializing in teaching programming and robotics.
Moderation Strategy
The video-sharing app has justified its safety measures, during debate over plans to lay off hundreds of content moderators in the United Kingdom. The company is expected to eliminate 439 jobs in its user protection team in its British office, with labor groups and internet security professionals voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.
A senior executive stated that people-led review would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by removing the most harmful content ahead of it has to be seen by people. The company reported a notable drop in explicit and harmful content handled by content reviewers over the previous year due to the use of its AI tools.
“We think that it’s essential to balance people and machines to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to limit contact with unsafe media as swiftly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
